The points represent the capitals of 39 states - or territorial entities - of the German Confederation (Deutscher Bund) which in 1830 were located within the (future) boundaries of the German Empire that would be founded in 1871. The polygons of this 'core Germany 1830' are available in a separate data set on this server.
