this map is a correct tracing of the map of Bidwell (Land Surveyor) by Thos. O. Larkin Esq: late Consul of the U.S. for California; and by him stated to be the best for reference in California. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Coordinates approximate and based on Greenwich meridian. Compass rose. Bar scale on map given in "Leguas Spanish." Includes Table of distances. Shows topography, vegetation, ranchos, missions, mining districts, land ownership, and anchorages in the San Francisco Bay. San Francisco called "Yerba Buena or San Francisco." "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1848 by J.H. Bufford & Co. in the Clerks office for the District Court of Massachusetts." Collector's note: This map is regarded as the first published map to show or designiate the gold region. Place names in Spanish. Stanford copy folded in cloth case, 5"x 3 1/4", blind stamped, "Gold Region" in gilt on front cover; signature in ink on verso front cover, "Stickney & Thaxter".
