- California of Briggs type, with nearly flat northern coast. C. Blanco is point furthest north. Includes I. de Ceintas off west coast of California. Title cartouche (upper left) flanked by standing natives. Reissued many times, with Latin, French, German, Dutch and Spanish texts. LC 452; Wagner 314,330,339,390; Wheat 45 & 48 & 49; Tooley 6 (Plate 28); Leighly 13 (Plate V); Koeman II,Me 50A(82), 59(88),75A(104),78A(78), 93A, 93B(96),113(88),122(87),136A(78); UCB; Goss (Plate 30); Burden 245 (Plate 245). [1653? or ca.1694], now with “Amstelodami, Penes Gerardum Valk et Petrum Schenk” within small cartouche (lower left). Petrus Schenk acquired the plates for the Atlas Major in 1694, but several references give this imprint the earlier date of 1653. Penes Gerardum Valk et Petrum Schenk.
